Umpiring – Be prepared, the Scouts way

As a B Badge Netball Umpire and a Netball Umpire Coach, Tester and Mentor, I use the golden rule of POSITION = VISION & VISION = DECISION

From this formula, I believe that netball umpires need to learn how to read the game so that they are always in the correct position, being in the correct position will mean that an umpire should have the correct vision of the court and will then be able to make the correct decision in relation to any sanctions that may or may not need to be awarded during a netball game.

Another rule that all netball umpires should work by is just like the Scouts famous moto ‘BE PREPARED’. A netball umpire should always prepare themselves before a game in more ways than one. An umpire should be fit enough to handle the full length of the match they are about to umpire. An umpire should always warm up prior to umpiring a netball game, a warmed up body will aid in the response times when the ball changes hands.

Carry a rule book with you to every game. A rule book is always handy to have on hand for a rule check at half time or straight after a game. Umpires should also always be up to date with any new rules or updates of the current rules. Netball Australia has been very good in having little videos developed for any rule change or update. With the new seasons soon to start or have already started in some areas, it would be very beneficial to watch over the new videos to make sure you are familiar with them. It is important to remember that the players will be learning the new rule updates just as much as the umpires, so a common sense approach must be taken when umpiring.

With the warm weather, stay hydrated. Its important to drink plenty of water in the lead up to any umpiring as well as throughout a game. Staying well hydrated will keep the mind functioning well so that your umpiring standard is maintained throughout the length of the game.

Basketball – The Road to Gold

Heading into the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, could this be Australia’s best chance at an Olympic Basketball medal?

With the success of Australian players in the NBA and the continued growth of the NBL is this the Olympics for redemption and a chance to make Basketball in Australia a real competitor against AFL, A-league and NRL. Our best result at any Olympic Games is 4th, and the last time was 2016 with a loss to Spain in the Bronze medal match by 1 point, it seems 2020 could be the year to break the drought of Olympic success for Men’s Basketball in Australia.

On paper we currently have the most exciting team to take to the Olympics if we can keep them all fit, Ben Simmons, Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova are all leading the charge in the NBA with Dante Exum still an exciting unknown in the NBA and not since Gaze, Longley and Heal have we had more household known names playing the game.

It is an exciting time for Australian Basketball and maybe it is Olympic Success that will give Basketball in Australia the growth and permanent place in our sporting landscape.

TWP started in August 2008 in the home office of its founder, Adam Skrobalak right here in Geelong. Being a local football coach, Adam saw there was a need for a local and reliable custom apparel supplier, so with just $150 he set out to be just that, and TWP was born.

Over the past 9 years, TWP has seen substantial growth not only amongst Geelong and the surrounding communities, but all across Victoria, Australia and internationally. This growth has been extremely exciting but at the same time it has been a huge challenge, not without its many hiccups along the way. But with resilience and perseverance we find ourselves today in a position that makes it all SO worth it.

It is now on our ninth birthday, we announce that we have begun our journey for 100% Geelong made apparel and manufacturing!

Manufacturing everything in Geelong has been our ultimate goal since TWP began, with a move to a small shop in Ryrie Street in 2010, followed by a move to a bigger space on Latrobe Terrace in 2012, we are now in our Bell Park factory which is allowing us to take this amazing step.

With the loss of large companies in Geelong such as Ford and Alcoa, TWP aim to change this trend by growing manufacturing and business in Geelong and providing jobs for locals, giving them something to support and be proud of.

By the end of 2018, TWP aim to have 100% of our custom apparel being produced in Geelong. This includes lots of planning, late nights, super efforts from staff members and the support of YOU!

Producing all products in Geelong will have many benefits for you as the customer, as well as the city of Geelong and its workforce. This change means streamlined turnaround times, assurance on delivery times, faster responses and better communication, whilst keeping the same low price, high quality, much loved TWP products!

TWP have always been a solid leader in the custom apparel market, and we anticipate that this move will help to take us to the next level. We hope that you are as excited about this move as we are, so that we can continue to grow and support the sporting clubs, social teams, organisations and businesses as we have done so for the past 9 years. Supporting local jobs and manufacturing is important to us, and this has been the driving force behind our dream to create something big for Geelong and Victoria.

Thank you to every single one of you who has supported us along this journey, whether you have ordered products on behalf of your organisation, if you wear TWP on game day, or have a TWP branded garment in your wardrobe, you have contributed to the changes we are making and supporting the Australian industries. #TWPsaysTHANKYOU #GeelongManufacturing #SupportLocal #ExcitingTimesAhead
